Abstract

The prevalence of gastritis is increasing annually. Statistics show rates of 34.7% in developed countries and 50.8% in developing countries; in Indonesia, the figure stands at 40.8%, while in Aceh specifically, it is estimated at 31.7%. These figures are driven by lifestyle and dietary habits that favor spicy foods and dishes containing coconut milk. A high prevalence is observed among the elderly, a demographic prone to irregular eating patterns and age-related declines in digestive function. Data indicates that seven out of ten elderly individuals suffer from acute gastritis but receive only gastric pain relievers from healthcare facilities. Given the significant side effects associated with long-term use of pharmacological medications, non-pharmacological remedies offer a viable solution. Balakacida leaves (Chromolaena odorata L.) are a native plant abundant along Aceh's coastline; locals refer to them as Oen Seurapoh. This Community Service (PkM) initiative aims to raise awareness and improve knowledge regarding gastritis and its management through the consumption of Balakacida leaf decoctions. The program employed health education sessions combined with pre- and post-intervention knowledge questionnaires. Key findings revealed that the elderly lacked sufficient knowledge regarding the signs, symptoms, and causes of gastritis, as well as the non-pharmacological remedies available to alleviate gastric pain
