Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common reproductive complaint experienced by adolescent girls. The phenomenon requires efforts to reduce dysmenorrhea pain, one of which is a non-pharmacological intervention Effleurage abdominal massage stimulates the release of the body’s endorphin analgesic, thereby helping to divert pain. Objective: To determine the influence of abdominal effleurage massage on primary dysmenorrhea pain in adolescent girls at SMA Muhammadiyah Gombong. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Using purposive sampling based on certain criteria and considerations, the sample consisted of 53 respondents. The intervention consisted of 4 movements in counts of 1–8 for 15 minutes on the first and second day of menstruation. Data were collected using the NRS measurement tool (validity 0.56–0.90 and reliability 0.75–0.89). Bivariate analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The results of the study on primary dysmenorrhea pain before effleurage massage, primary dysmenorrhea pain was predominantly at a scale of 4–6 (moderate pain) on the first day (54.7%) and second day (50.9%). After effleurage massage, pain levels decreased to a scale of 1–3 (mild pain) on the first day (62.3%) and second day (75.5%). The Wilcoxon test showed p-value 0.000 (<0.05), indicating an effect of abdominal effleurage massage on primary dysmenorrhea pain. Conclusion: Abdominal effleurage massage has been proven to reduce primary dysmenorrhea pain. Recommendations: For future researchers are expected to add a control group to reduce research refraction.
