Abstract

Manual sorting of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) using a conventional pointed tool requires prolonged bending and repetitive movements, which may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. This study aimed to evaluate injury risk among five FFB sorting operators at PKS PT. X and redesign the tool to improve working posture. We assessed subjective complaints using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) and analyzed working posture using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method. The NBM results indicated complaints at six major body regions, particularly the back, forearms, and wrists, with symptoms predominantly categorized as painful to very painful. The initial REBA assessment produced a score of 11, indicating a very high risk requiring immediate improvement. The tool was redesigned based on the operators’ 50th-percentile anthropometric data, incorporating a 120 cm tool length, a 15° angled D-handle, and an additional footstep to improve load distribution. Simulation after redesign showed that the REBA score decreased to 3, corresponding to a low-risk level. The redesigned tool effectively improved working posture and reduced injury risk.
