Abstract

This study investigates the effect of cobalt content and sintering temperature on the density and hardness of tungsten carbide cobalt materials produced using powder metallurgy. This research aims to analyze how binder content variation and sintering temperature affect the material's physical and mechanical properties. This study used an experimental approach with cobalt contents of 4%, 7%, and 10% and sintering temperatures of 1200°C, 1300°C, and 1400°C. The fabrication process included powder mixing, 24-hour ball milling, cold compaction, and sintering in an inert atmosphere. We measured density using Archimedes principle and hardness using the Vickers method. The results show that the maximum density was obtained at 10% cobalt content and a sintering temperature of 1300°C, while increasing the temperature to 1400°C decreased density due to grain growth and pore coarsening. Hardness increases with sintering temperature but has not reached the optimum value because of porosity and microstructure distribution. The results show that the combination of binder content and sintering temperature strongly determines the final properties of the material, with optimum conditions achieved at specific parameters that balance densification and microstructural stability.
