Abstract

Turning is one of the most widely used machining processes in manufacturing. This study analyzes the effects of cutting speed and feed rate on carbide tool life during the turning of AISI 1018 steel using an experimental method. The experiments were conducted under dry turning conditions with cutting speeds of 44.6, 71.8, 113.2, and 178.6 m/min and feed rates of 0.14 and 0.16 mm/rev. Tool wear was evaluated based on flank wear (VB) until the wear criterion of VB = 0.30 mm, following ISO 3685. The results showed that increasing cutting speed and feed rate accelerated tool wear, resulting in shorter tool life. The maximum tool life was 27 min 52 s at a cutting speed of 44.6 m/min, while the minimum tool life was 7 min 3 s at 178.6 m/min (obtained by linear interpolation at VB = 0.30 mm). A cutting speed of 113.2 m/min and a feed rate of 0.16 mm/rev provided the best balance between machining productivity and tool life.
