Abstract

Abstract A Good examination process for medical students must be able to mimic a real world situation. Decrement of number of patients, case complexity, and patient safety issue should be considered. Meanwhile using only one case with real patient does not represent competency sampling. Standardized Patient (SP) Program is a tool to facilitate medical student’s learning. SP is a normal person who is trained to portray real patient. SP can be use in both learning or assessment process of history taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning, diagnostics, therapy, and education. A well established SP system is very crucial. A sets of steps can be done to obtained a good SP system. It comprises: recruitment, training process, rehearsal, and conduction of examination. This article describes those points above while emphasizing on training process which include practical steps and general principals in order to obtain a well managed training. Abstract

ABSTRACT Instructional design is undoubtfully an important part of a teaching learning process. An integration between the teacher and the tools maximize the learning impact of the process. Several characteristics of a good instructional design are considered essential in achieving desired goals. In order to construct such instrument certain steps such as Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate should be followed. Internal process of learning should also be considered so that the information effectively reached the desired outcome. In First Aid block , a PowerPoint Presentation was chosen because of its versatility to accommodate various type of modality in instructional design. Abstract

Introduction : Personality traits have been shown to influence the individual’s critical thinking, learning strategies, and motivation, resulting in the overall student’s academic performance. Academic performance is an important factor among medical students to ensure their success in long-term medical education, training and work performance as medical doctors. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between personality traits and academic performance among medical students. Methods : The study was conducted among preclinical medical students from the Medical Schools of Pelita Harapan University, Indonesia. The personality traits were assessed using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3), which consists of 60 items assessing the five personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness). The academic performance was evaluated using the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) score. Results : A total of 224 participants were included in this study. The mean age of the participants was 19.8 years old (SD±1.3). Neuroticism was the predominant personality trait among medical students and was found to be negatively associated with CGPA in univariable and multivariable analyses (p<0.05). Conclusion : This study reveals that neuroticism personality traits are prevalent among preclinical medical students and adversely affect their academic performance. Understanding the general personality traits present among medical students and its relationship with academic performance can provide valuable input for further medical education programme development.
