Abstract

ABSTRACT Hypertension is a highly prevalent non-communicable disease and is known as a silent killer because it is often asymptomatic but carries the risk of serious complications. Globally, an estimated 1.4 billion adults have hypertension, and nearly half are unaware of their status. In Indonesia, the prevalence reaches 29.2%, while in East Nusa Tenggara it is 26.4%. In Kupang City, hypertension cases at the Oesapa Community Health Center increased significantly from 4.985 cases in 2022 to 59.888 cases in 2024. This study aims to determine the magnitude of economic losses for hypertension sufferers at the Oesapa Community Health Center. This type of research is quantitative with a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 352 hypertension patients selected using simple random sampling. The analysis was conducted descriptively. The results showed a total economic loss of IDR 204.443.117 (approximately USD 11.605) per year, with an average loss of IDR 580.803 (approximately USD 33) per patient per year. Most respondents fell into the low intangible cost impact category, although concerns about complications remained the most dominant aspect. Indirect costs constitute the largest component of the economic losses of hypertension patients, while intangible costs are relatively low. These findings highlight the need to strengthen promotive and preventive efforts, as well as improve adherence to therapy, to reduce the economic burden of hypertension.
