Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder, particularly among adolescents, often caused by the bacteria Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Antibiotic resistance in acne treatment necessitates the development of natural-based alternatives. This study aims to formulate and evaluate the antibacterial activity of acne patches based on kawista bark extract (Limonia acidissima L.) at varying concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%. Extraction was performed by maceration using 96% ethanol, and patches were formulated with a combination of HPMC and PVP polymers. Physical property tests included organoleptic evaluation, weight uniformity, drying shrinkage, thickness, folding endurance, and pH. Antibacterial activity was tested using the diffusion method against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Results showed that all formulations met good physical patch standards, being : homogeneous, stable, thickness less than 1 mm, folding endurance greater than 300 times, and pH of 6. Antibacterial activity increased with higher extract concentration, with the largest inhibition zones observed at 75% concentration (15.16 mm for C. acnes and 18.05 mm for S. epidermidis), approaching the effectiveness of the positive control (clindamycin 10%). This study demonstrates that kawista bark extract acne patches have potential as an alternative topical acne therapy with strong antibacterial activity and physical characteristics that meet modern patch preparation standards.
