Abstract

The lips have fewer layers of corneocytes than the skin and do not contain sebaceous glands and hair follicles, so they are prone to drought. Lip care can be done with the use of lip balm that can protect and maintain lip moisture. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the physical characteristics of lip balm preparations, antioxidant activity as well as GC-MS testing to see the bioactive components in the oil. The results of the qualitative analysis of the oil contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and saponins. Quantitative analysis of GC-MS of avocado seed oil found that the dominant fatty acids were oleic acid, VCO contained the dominant fatty acids of lauric acid, the bioactive tamanu oil was predominant beta-myrcene and olive oil contained the dominant fatty acids of oleic acid. All lip balm formulas have yellowish-white organoleptics, soft and homogeneous texture, have a pH value ranging from 5.07 – 6.88, and melting point ranging from 51 – 52.6 °C.  Lip balm with a ratio of VCO and tamanu oil has moderate antioxidant activity.
