Abstract

Old age is a natural phase of the human life cycle characterized by physical changes, functional limitations, and transformations in social roles. From the Qur’anic perspective, old age is not merely portrayed as a stage of biological decline but also as a phase with significant spiritual and social dimensions that affirm the dignity and position of older persons. This study aims to analyze the Qur’anic construction of old age by focusing on its biological, spiritual, and social dimensions. This study employs a qualitative library research method using a tafsīr mawḍū‘ī (thematic exegesis) approach. The primary data consist of Qur’anic verses concerning old age, particularly Q.S. al-Rūm [30]: 54, Q.S. Maryam [19]: 8, Q.S. Hūd [11]: 72, and Q.S. al-Naḥl [16]: 70, while the secondary data comprise classical and contemporary Qur’anic commentaries and other relevant scholarly literature. The data were analyzed through the identification of relevant terms, examination of exegetical interpretations, comparison of exegetical perspectives, and thematic synthesis. The findings demonstrate that the Qur’an constructs old age through three interrelated dimensions. The biological dimension is reflected in bodily changes, physical weakness, and declining cognitive abilities as part of the divinely ordained human life cycle. The spiritual dimension indicates that physical limitations in old age can become a means of developing awareness of human dependence on God, reflecting on one’s life journey, and strengthening eschatological orientation. Meanwhile, the social dimension emphasizes that old age does not diminish a person’s dignity, experience, or social value; therefore, older persons remain entitled to respect, care, and meaningful participation in family and community life. This construction demonstrates that the Qur’an presents a balanced understanding of old age by acknowledging biological limitations while affirming the spiritual value and social dignity of older persons.
