Abstract

Movies play an important role in shaping public perspectives and mindsets. Currently, many films address gender issues by portraying women as weak and powerless figures. One example of female representation can be found in the character Ancika in the film Ancika: Dia yang Bersamaku 1995. This film presents Ancika’s mindset and actions in dealing with seduction from motorcycle gang members and young entrepreneurs. This study aims to analyze the representation of independent women in the film using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which includes the aspects of denotation, connotation, and myth. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation and documentation by capturing screenshots of selected scenes related to the research focus. The data were analyzed to identify the meanings of female independence represented through Ancika’s character. The results show that 15 scenes represent independent women in the film Ancika: Dia yang Bersamaku 1995. These representations are reflected through Ancika’s courage, assertiveness, ability to make decisions, and self-control in responding to her social environment.
