Abstract

Sea cucumbers and sea urchins are commonly found in shallow waters, and are seston or detritus eaters. Samples of sea cucumbers and sea urchins were taken from 3 ecosystems, sea grass, wharf and coral reefs using a purposive sampling method. Measurement of physico-chemical variables was also carried out at the study site. The relationship between aquatic physico-chemical factors and food habits on the abundance of sea cucumbers and sea urchins was analyzed using the PCA (Principle Component Analysis) test. The highest abundance of Diadema setosum was found in coral reef ecosystems as much as 91 ind/150m2 and the highest Holothuria atra was found in marine ecosystems with 44 ind/150m2. The digestive contents were observed using a microscope. Food habits based on the composition of the types of digestive contents were analyzed using the Index of Preponderance (IP) method. The main food is Nitzschia sp., then complementary foods is Pleurosigma sp. and additional food consisting of Oscillatoria sp., and various other types of phytoplankton. Based on the results of the PCA test, 3 main factors supported the ban on sea cucumbers and sea urchins in the waters of Pulau Panjang, Jepara are DO, temperature, and pH.
