Abstract

Microplastics are waste materials that have been degraded into particles smaller than 5 mm due to light, temperature and air flow. This situation increases the potential for microplastic translocation in fish as aquatic organisms. The high level of microplastic contamination in fish has the potential for translocation of microplastics to the human body through consumption of contaminated fish. This research aims to examine microplastic contamination in fish in Indonesian waters, including a comparison of microplastic contamination in seawater fish and freshwater fish, as well as a comparison of the presence of microplastics in fish organs based on a review of available literature. This research uses a literature review method with the criteria for the selected journal being publications in 2013-2023. The research results revealed that the highest presence of microplastics was found in seawater fish at 66%, while in freshwater fish it was 34%. The most common microplastics found include fibers, filaments, fragments and films with percentages of 29%, 22% and 18% respectively. The organs where microplastics are most commonly found include digestive organs at 75%, gills at 22% and meat at 3%. These findings highlight the importance of public awareness of microplastic contamination, as well as the need for plastic waste management and microplastic testing of fish before they are marketed.
