Abstract

Urban waterlogging and flooding have become major challenges in the management of residential areas due to population growth, changes in land use, and increasing rainfall intensity. Inadequate drainage systems reduce infiltration capacity and increase surface runoff, thereby elevating the risk of waterlogging. This study aims to analyze the role of urban drainage systems in reducing waterlogging risks in residential areas based on a systematic literature review of various national and international studies published between 2017 and 2026. The research employs a qualitative approach through a systematic literature review of 30 scientific publications discussing the effectiveness of urban drainage, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), green infrastructure, and surface runoff management. The results indicate that increasing drainage channel capacity, implementing sustainable drainage systems, utilizing green infrastructure, and integrating hydrological modeling technologies such as SWMM, GIS, HEC-RAS, and InfoWorks ICM can significantly reduce the risk of waterlogging. Various studies demonstrate that a combination of structural and non-structural approaches is more effective than the implementation of conventional drainage systems alone. The findings confirm that integrated drainage management is a critical factor in enhancing the resilience of residential areas to the risks of waterlogging and urban flooding.
