Abstract

The increasing global consumption of plastic has resulted in the accumulation of waste, becoming one of the most critical environmental challenges. Numerous studies indicate that plastic waste can be utilized as an alternative construction material, particularly in the production of environmentally friendly paving blocks. This article aims to evaluate the feasibility of plastic waste-based paving blocks from technical, environmental, economic, and sustainability perspectives. A systematic literature review was conducted using 25 national and international scientific publications published between 2021 and 2026. Data were analyzed through a descriptive-comparative approach to identify material characteristics, compressive strength, durability, waste reduction potential, and implementation opportunities in the construction industry. The findings reveal that PET, LDPE, HDPE, and mixed plastic waste can improve the mechanical properties of paving blocks under specific compositions. Several studies reported compressive strengths that meet standards for light to medium construction applications. Furthermore, plastic waste utilization reduces cement and natural aggregate consumption while minimizing the volume of waste disposed of in landfills. Economically, this technology demonstrates strong prospects due to abundant raw material availability and relatively competitive production costs. Therefore, plastic waste-based paving blocks are considered feasible as sustainable construction materials that support circular economy principles and urban waste management strategies.
