Abstract

The phenomenon of Eldest Daughter Syndrome (EDS) has become widely discussed through the content of influencer Jennifer Christie (@jenniferchrstie), portraying emotional burden, demands for independence, family expectations, and the role of "second parent" imposed on eldest daughters. This study analyzes audience reception of that content among female students at Pesantren Putri As-Sa'adah Terboyo Semarang, using a descriptive qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm, grounded in Stuart Hall's Reception Analysis theory (dominant, negotiated, oppositional positions) and Berger and Luckmann's Social Construction of Self theory (externalization, objectivation, internalization of roles). Subjects were six eldest-daughter students who had watched the EDS content, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, and literature review, analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Results show reception among the six informants was not uniform: two occupied a dominant-hegemonic position due to parentification institutionalized since childhood, while four occupied a negotiated position due to non-demanding parenting or ability to filter the narrative against personal experience, with none fully oppositional. Islamic values within the pesantren, including birrul walidain, did not replace personal experience but reinforced acceptance among heavily parentified informants and encouraged renegotiation among those without strong family pressure, showing that the same media message can be interpreted differently within a homogeneous religious community.
