Abstract

This study analyzes the matan quality of the hadith in Sunan an-Nasa'i No. 5126 prohibiting women from wearing perfume, with a focus on the term zāniyah, using an integrative approach combining matan criticism and classical Arabic semantics (al-Dalālah and Balāgah). Employing a qualitative library-based method, the study applies matan criticism through consistency tests with the Qur'an, other hadiths, and linguistic principles, alongside semantic analysis to distinguish between literal (ḥaqīqī) and figurative (majāzī) meanings. The findings indicate that the hadith is maqbūl in terms of its sanad. However, a literal interpretation of zāniyah contradicts the Qur'anic requirement of four witnesses for establishing adultery, rendering such interpretation untenable within matan criticism. Semantically, zāniyah is best understood as majāzī functioning as mubālagah taḥżīriyyah (hyperbolic moral warning) through isti’ārah or majāz mursal rather than a legal verdict of adultery. In the Indonesian Muslim context, this hadith is more appropriately positioned as a contextual ethical guide, not an absolute prohibition, with intent, situation, and context as determining variables.
