Abstract

Background: Family involvement is crucial, especially for patients in intensive care. The increasing number of patients receiving intensive care and the occurrence of sudden, life-threatening conditions cause families to experience anxiety, uncertainty, and even stress. Such crisis situations can interfere with the selection of effective coping strategies used during the ICU stay. Objective: This study aims to explore in depth the experiences of families and the coping strategies they employ during critical care hospitalization in the ICU at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital in Surakarta. Method: This study employed a qualitative descriptive design using a phenomenological approach. Results: The study identified two themes: first, the families’ experiences during critical care hospitalization, encompassing psychological, physical, social, and spiritual dimensions; and second, the families’ coping strategies, which focused on emotion regulation and problem-solving, ranging from meeting information needs to emotional, social, and spiritual support.
