Abstract

These motor vehicle emissions are a major source of urban air pollution, contributing to the decline in environmental health. Vehicle emission testing (CO and HC parameters) is commonly used to assess emission eligibility, but these evaluations are often ‘pass or fail’ and do not utilize historical data to control the stability of the emission process over time. This study aims to analyze the stability of the carbon monoxide emission process in motor vehicles using the Statistical Process Control approach as a process control tool. The data used are the results of motor vehicle emission tests in the Tangerang area, including the date and time of testing, carbon monoxide levels, test operators, vehicle types, vehicle age, and fuel types. The analytical approach in this study uses an Individual Moving Range control chart to assess process stability and identify the presence of special cause variations. The results  indicate that the carbon monoxide emission process is not yet in a statistically controlled condition, the results showed that 43 observations exceeded the upper control limit, with 88% out of control points associated with one operator. Abnormal variations that occur are not only caused by vehicle conditions, but are also influenced by operator factors, testing methods, and measurement systems. The results of this study indicate that Statistical Process Control can be used as a tool for controlling vehicle emission quality and not only as a tool for inspecting whether the emission test passes or fails.
