Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever remains an important public-health problem in Indonesia, where household behavior and environmental conditions influence opportunities for Aedes mosquito breeding and disease transmission. This study examined the relationship between community behavior and previous dengue hemorrhagic fever occurrence in the service area of Teling Community Health Center, Manado City. A descriptive-analytic cross-sectional design was used with 30 respondents. Community behavior was categorized as sufficient, good, or poor, whereas dengue occurrence was classified as ever or never experienced. Univariate distributions and a Chi-Square test were used for analysis. Poor behavior was the most frequent category, reported by 17 respondents (56.6%), followed by good behavior in 8 (26.7%) and sufficient behavior in 5 (16.7%). Twenty-one respondents (70.0%) reported previous dengue, while 9 (30.0%) had never experienced dengue. Among respondents with previous dengue, 14 (66.7%) were in the poor-behavior category. The Chi-Square analysis yielded p = 0.026, indicating a statistically significant association between community behavior and dengue occurrence in the study sample. These findings support sustained community-centered dengue prevention emphasizing environmental hygiene, household vector control, accessible health information, larval control, and locally appropriate surveillance measures.
