Abstract

The increasing global demand for energy, particularly in the electricity sector, has contributed to a rise in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially from fossil fuel-based power generation. One potential decarbonization strategy is the utilization of hydrogen as a promising alternative fuel due to its clean characteristics and its potential to reduce carbon emissions through hydrogen-assisted combustion or hydrogen co-firing in gas turbine power plants. This study aims to analyze the effects of hydrogen addition on the performance and emissions of the gas turbine 2000E V94.2 using a thermodynamic analysis approach with DWSIM software. Hydrogen mole fractions of 10%, 20%, and 30% were blended with natural gas. The simulation results indicate that increasing the hydrogen mole fraction increased the turbine power output by 2.2%, 5%, and 8%, respectively. In addition, CO₂ emissions were significantly reduced by 1.3%, 3%, and 5%, respectively, without requiring major modifications to the existing infrastructure. The implementation of hydrogen-assisted combustion also improved overall power plant performance by approximately 1%, 2%, and 4% for the corresponding hydrogen fractions while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. These findings demonstrate that hydrogen-assisted combustion has considerable potential to support Indonesia’s transition toward a cleaner and low-carbon energy system, contribute to climate change mitigation, and serve as a reference for the future implementation of hydrogen co-firing technology in gas turbine power plants.
