Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common reproductive health problems experienced by adolescent girls and can interfere with daily activities, learning concentration, and quality of life. One non-pharmacological approach that may help reduce dysmenorrhea pain is the consumption of dark chocolate. The magnesium, flavonoids, and theobromine contained in dark chocolate are thought to contribute to muscle relaxation and help reduce menstrual pain. Purpose: To determine the effect of dark chocolate administration on the intensity of dysmenorrhea pain among adolescent girls at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar. Method: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The study population consisted of 30 eleventh-grade adolescent girls at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar who participated in the Youth Red Cross extracurricular activity and experienced dysmenorrhea. Total sampling was used. Dysmenorrhea pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. Results: The mean dysmenorrhea pain intensity before dark chocolate administration was 5.70 ± 1.26, while after dark chocolate administration it decreased to 3.10 ± 1.18. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in dysmenorrhea pain intensity before and after dark chocolate administration. Conclusion: Dark chocolate administration has an effect on reducing dysmenorrhea pain intensity among adolescent girls at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar.
