Abstract

In medical science, terminology is an important means of expressing scientific knowledge accurately, concisely, and systematically. A significant proportion of medical terms originates from Ancient Greek and Latin, and these terms continue to be actively used in modern medical vocabulary. One of the most productive terminological elements is “cardio-.” This element originates from the Ancient Greek word kardia, meaning “heart,” and is used in modern medical terminology to express concepts related to the heart and the cardiovascular system. The element “cardio-” occurs in numerous medical terms, including cardiology, cardiomyopathy, cardiomegaly, cardiovascular, and cardiogram. The semantic content of these terms becomes more specific depending on the combination of the “cardio-” component with other morphemes. Therefore, “cardio-” can express not only an anatomical concept but also concepts related to physiological processes, diseases, diagnosis, treatment, and other aspects of the cardiovascular system. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the semantic features of the terminological element “cardio-” in medical science, its morphological structure, and its semantic functions in various medical terms.
