Abstract

Ensuring water availability that meets plant needs is a crucial aspect of irrigation management. This study developed a watering control prototype capable of determining pump operation times based on the moisture level of the growing medium while also monitoring the water supply in the tank. The system utilizes an Arduino Uno for data processing, a soil moisture sensor to assess the condition of the growing medium, an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor to monitor water levels, and a relay module to interface with and control the DC pump. The Arduino uses data from both sensors to make decisions regarding watering operations. The pump is activated via the relay when the soil is dry and the tank's water supply remains above the specified threshold. Conversely, the pump is deactivated once the soil moisture reaches the target level or the tank's water level drops below the minimum limit. System development involved hardware design, microcontroller programming, sensor calibration, assembly, and functional testing. Tests conducted under various growing medium conditions demonstrated that the soil moisture sensor effectively responds to changes in soil water content, while the ultrasonic sensor reliably monitors water availability in the tank. Integrating both sensors with the Arduino and relay creates an automated watering mechanism that adjusts to soil conditions and water supply levels. This system offers an alternative to manual watering and promotes more controlled water usage in household and small-scale agricultural settings.
