Abstract

Students has misunderstand the concept and misconception in solar system because it is abstract and far reaching material. In addition, science learning using the TaRL approach on solar system material has never been done. Thus, this study aims to integrate the TaRL approach into solar system material to improve the understanding of concept and reduce misconceptions. The research method used descriptive quantitavive using a one group pretest-posttest research design on 31 students of seventh grade at SMP Negeri 2 Pakis. The research instrument used two-tier multiple choice with statement and false-correct statement pretest-posttest. The results of this study showed an increase in understanding the concept through an average score from 41,013 to 72,271 with good category. This is also supported by the result of the Wilxocon test of 0,000 and n-gain score of 0,562 with a moderate category, which proves that there is an increase from the results of the pretest and posttest that has been done. In terms of understanding the concept indicators, the ability to conclude is still lacking with an n-gain of 0,4 (moderate). While in terms of n-gain score misconceptions, students are less able to explain the sun as a star with n-gain score of 0,39 (moderate). Based on the results of the data analysis, the research using the discovery learning model with the TaRL approach was able to improve students understanding of the concept.
