<![CDATA[Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) are still a serious problem in patient safety with a high prevalence in various countries, including Indonesia. The role of the Infection Prevention and Control Nurse (IPCN) is very strategic in supporting the implementation of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program in hospitals. This study aims to explore in depth the experience of IPCN in preventing and controlling infections in hospitals. Qualitative research with an exploratory descriptive design was conducted in several hospitals in Indonesia involving ten IPCNs selected based on inclusion criteria. Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, then analyzed using a thematic analysis approach according to Braun and Clarke. The results of the research produced four main themes, namely the journey and motivation to become an IPCN, the implementation of comprehensive duties and responsibilities, challenges and memorable experiences in carrying out roles, and expectations for future work optimization. The findings show that IPCN plays a multidimensional role in education, surveillance, compliance audits, cross-unit coordination, and crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite facing limited resources and negative perceptions from some health workers. The role of IPCN has not touched the clinical area in nursing care in nursing units. This study concludes that the role of IPCN is very important in improving patient safety and lowering the number of HAIs. The recommendations are directed at strengthening managerial support, providing adequate facilities, clearer assignment of duties and responsibilities both as functional and managerial nurses in the IPC team, improving competencies through continuous training, and strengthening information systems to support the effectiveness of IPC.]]>
