Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are major non-communicable diseases with increasing prevalence worldwide. Diabetes is one of the leading risk factors for CKD; However, epidemiological evidence describing the characteristics of both diseases at the regional healthcare level remains limited. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of patients with DM and CKD at Konawe Selatan Regional General Hospital, Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted using a descriptive epidemiological approach based on person, place, and time. Secondary data were obtained from patients' medical records. Variables included sex, age, occupation, ethnicity, and time of hospital visits. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented as frequencies and percentages. Female patients accounted for the majority of DM cases (54%), whereas CKD was more common among males (54%). The most affected age groups were 40–59 years for DM (43%) and ≥63 years for CKD (37%). Housewives represented the largest occupational group among patients with DM (40%), while farmers predominated among CKD patients (43%). The Bugis ethnic group constituted the largest proportion of both DM (34%) and CKD (37%) cases. The highest number of DM visits occurred in December (14.3%), whereas CKD visits peaked in August (14.3%); the lowest number of cases for both diseases was recorded in November (2.9%). DM and CKD predominantly affected middle-aged and older adults with distinct sociodemographic characteristics. These findings highlight the importance of early detection, health education, and community-based risk factor management to reduce disease progression and improve health outcomes.
