Abstract

Family caregivers play a crucial role in managing elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to examine the relationship between family caregivers’ knowledge regarding T2DM care and their self-efficacy in caring for elderly patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 122 family caregivers of elderly patients with T2DM. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to assess caregivers’ knowledge and self-efficacy. The Spearman rank correlation test was used to analyze the relationship between variables. The mean age of respondents was 52.6 ± 8.04 years, and most were female (77%), had completed junior high school (49.2%), were not employed (81.1%), and were the children of the patients (77%). The mean knowledge score was 17.2 ± 3.4 (range 12-25), while the mean self-efficacy score was 42.5 ± 11.7 (range 19-61). A strong and significant positive correlation was found between caregivers’ knowledge and self-efficacy (rₛ = 0.758, p < 0.001), indicating that higher knowledge is associated with higher self-efficacy. Caregivers’ knowledge is significantly associated with self-efficacy in caring for elderly patients with T2DM
