Abstract

Food security is not only related to food availability but also to the rights and abilities of each individual, including women, to control the process of food production, distribution, and consumption. This study aims to analyze the role of gender in the Sustainable Food Yard Program (P2L) at the household level in Padang City. The study used a quantitative descriptive approach through Harvard analysis involving 30 households receiving assistance as respondents. The researchers selected respondents using purposive random sampling. The results showed that women, especially wives and daughters, play a dominant role in all stages of P2L activities, from polybag preparation and planting to selling garden produce. Wives allocate 244.59 hours per year and daughters 241.06 hours per year in P2L program activities, indicating that women are the main actors in program implementation. However, there is still gender inequality in P2L assistance households, where wives have the highest workload throughout the year, which is 4,202.3 hours per year, covering productive, reproductive, and social activities. Men's roles in domestic and social activities remain limited. Therefore, the P2L program's success requires family support, cohesiveness among farmers' women’s groups, and ongoing government mentoring.
