Abstract

Parental supervision influences children's success in maintaining oral hygiene. Preschool-aged children still require guidance to perform correct tooth-brushing techniques; thus, the role of parents is crucial in establishing oral health habits. Preliminary data from Al-Fitrah Kindergarten showed that out of 30 children examined, 23 (76.6%) had dental caries, with an average def-t score of 2 (low). This study aimed to determine the effect of parental supervision during tooth brushing on the oral hygiene status of children at Al-Fitrah Kindergarten and Amanah Kindergarten in Nagan Raya Regency. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group approach was employed. The sample consisted of 40 children divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 20 respondents each. Oral hygiene status was measured using the Patient Hygiene Performance Modified (PHP-M) index. Data were analyzed using Paired T-tests and Independent T-tests at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the average PHP-M score in the experimental group decreased from 36.50 to 22.25 (p<0.001), whereas in the control group, it decreased from 37.45 to 36.30 (p=0.029). The Independent T-test indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups following the intervention (p<0.001). These findings demonstrate that parental supervision during tooth brushing positively influences the improvement of children's oral hygiene. It can be concluded that parental supervision during tooth brushing is effective in reducing PHP-M scores and improving children's oral hygiene status. Therefore, active parental involvement should be enhanced as a promotional and preventive measure in maintaining children's oral health
