Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder associated with Propionibacterium acnes. Citronella and turmeric essential oils have attracted attention as natural antibacterial agents for topical acne treatment. This study aimed to develop acne patches containing a combination of these essential oils and evaluate their physicochemical characteristics and antibacterial activity. Acne patches were prepared using a sodium alginate matrix and characterized for organoleptic properties, thickness, pH, folding endurance, weight uniformity, moisture content, and antibacterial activity against P. acnes using the agar diffusion method. All formulations met the acceptable criteria for organoleptic properties, thickness (0.11–0.14 mm), pH (6.14–6.75), folding endurance (>300 folds), and weight uniformity, whereas moisture content exceeded the acceptable limit. The combination of 3% citronella oil and 6% turmeric oil exhibited the highest antibacterial activity in its free form (12.68 mm), but no inhibition zone was observed after incorporation into the acne patch. These findings highlight the need to optimize the formulation to improve active compound release and antibacterial efficacy.
