Abstract

The #MarriageIsScary phenomenon on TikTok highlights the emergence of a digital narrative that portrays marriage not only as an ideal institution but also as a space fraught with risks, unequal relationships, betrayal, emotional pressure, and social demands. This narrative has spread widely through content that has garnered a strong response from audiences and shaped public discourse on marriage on social media. This study aims to analyze how the discourse of fear surrounding marriage is constructed in TikTok content tagged #MarriageIsScary and to uncover its role as a form of resistance against the hegemony of traditional marriage. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method using Norman Fairclough’s Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, encompassing the dimensions of text, discursive practices, and sociocultural practices, supported by Antonio Gramsci’s Theory of Hegemony. Data were collected through virtual observation and documentation of three TikTok videos discussing the “provider mindset,” infidelity, and verbal abuse by husbands, including audience comments. The results show that text, visuals, audio, and comments work together to construct a representation of marriage as a space fraught with risk. This discourse reflects a crisis of trust among the younger generation and functions as a digital counter-hegemony that shapes a new critical awareness of the institution of marriage.
