Abstract

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants; however, the adequacy of breast milk production during the postpartum period remains one of the challenges that can hinder the success of exclusive breastfeeding. One widely used nonpharmacological method to increase breast milk production is oxytocin massage. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of oxytocin massage on the adequacy of breast milk production in postpartum mothers at the Kuala Kurun Regional General Hospital (RSUD). The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 30 postpartum mothers selected using total sampling. Data on the smoothness of breast milk production were collected via observation sheets before and after the intervention and then analyzed using the McNemar test with a significance level of 5%. The results showed that before the intervention, 53.3% of the respondents experienced irregular breast milk production, and after the intervention, this figure increased to 56.7%. The results of the McNemar test showed no significant difference between before and after oxytocin massage (p=1.000). These findings indicate that oxytocin massage was not effective in improving the smoothness of breast milk production in postpartum mothers in this study. The high proportion of cesarean deliveries, lack of breastfeeding experience, and psychological factors are suspected to have influenced the study results. Oxytocin massage is recommended in combination with lactation counseling, pain management, and comprehensive breastfeeding support to optimize breastfeeding success.
