Abstract

This study examines the illumination of zoomorphic motifs in the Muṣḥaf of Raden Haji Abdul Majid, part of the collection of the Prabu Geusan Ulun Museum in Sumedang, which is important to preserve as an Islamic cultural heritage of religious, historical, artistic, and cultural value. The illumination represents local identity as well as the socio-cultural context of its copying. The study aims to analyze the formal characteristics, philosophical meaning, and contextualization of the zoomorphic motifs in the muṣḥaf. A qualitative descriptive-analytical method was employed, with data collected through interviews, field documentation, and library research, analyzed using philological, codicological, and Qur'anic anthropological approaches. The results show that the zoomorphic illumination in the muṣḥaf produced by Raden Haji Abdul Majid in 1856 CE is not merely ornamental, but represents the relationship between the Qur'an, local culture, and the process of Islamization in Sumedang. The Macan Ali motif at the beginning of Surah al-Kahf and at the end of Surah al-Falaq and al-Nās indicates the transmission of Cirebon culture to Sumedang as well as the acculturation of Islamic tradition with Tatar Sundanese cultural identity. This motif carries symbolic meanings of strength, protection, and steadfastness of faith, thus demonstrating aesthetic, cultural, and symbolic functions within the Qur'anic manuscript
