Abstract

The availability of abundant clean water serves as an essential asset in supporting the community’s productive economic activities, one of which is catfish farming using tarpaulin ponds. However, limited technical knowledge often becomes a constraint, resulting in suboptimal practices and relatively high fish mortality rates before harvest. This condition is also experienced by the community of Garungan Hamlet despite the support of the PAMSIMAS program as a provider of clean water resources. To address this issue, the Community Service Program (KKN) Group 086 of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta implemented tarpaulin catfish farming as the main program, aiming to enhance the community’s knowledge, skills, and independence in managing aquaculture practices. The program was carried out through a participatory approach involving socialization and hands-on practice, including the construction of a 2 × 1 × 0.8 meter tarpaulin pond, stocking of 500 fingerlings (6–7 cm), scheduled feeding, disease prevention, feed management, and the utilization of wastewater from ponds as organic fertilizer. The results indicate active community involvement across various stages of the activities, improved technical understanding of aquaculture, and growing readiness among residents to continue the initiative independently. This program contributes to strengthening community capacity while simultaneously creating opportunities for sustainable productive enterprises in Garungan Hamlet.
