Abstract

Pain during the first stage of labor is a common physiological experience resulting from uterine contractions and progressive cervical dilation, which, if inadequately managed, may trigger psychological complications and impede labor progression. This study aimed to analyze the effect of breathing relaxation techniques on pain intensity among laboring women in the first stage of labor at RSUD dr. H. Andi Abdurahman Noor. A pre-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest approach was employed, involving 30 respondents selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) instrument before and after the breathing relaxation intervention. Bivariate statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielded a Z value of -4.767 with a significance level of p=0.000 (p<0.05), confirming a statistically significant difference in pain intensity before and after the intervention. The proportion of respondents in the severe pain category declined markedly from 66.7% to 3.3% post-intervention. These findings confirm the effectiveness of deep breathing relaxation as a safe, affordable, and easily applicable non-pharmacological modality in labor pain management, warranting its integration into standard midwifery care protocols across healthcare facilities.
