Abstract

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a neonatal congenital disorder that can cause permanent developmental impairment if not detected early. Low coverage of Congenital Hypothyroidism Screening (CHS) at primary health facilities is influenced by limited maternal knowledge and educational attainment. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal education and knowledge about CHS and its implementation for newborns at UPTD Puskesmas Bungkukan. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach was employed, involving 22 postpartum mothers selected through total sampling. Bivariate analysis was conducted using Spearman's rho correlation test. The results indicated a significant relationship between education and CHS implementation (r = 0.573; p = 0.005), and between knowledge and CHS implementation (r = 0.494; p = 0.019). A very strong correlation was also found between education and knowledge (r = 0.959; p = 0.000). It is concluded that maternal education and knowledge are the primary determinants of CHS implementation, necessitating sustained and targeted health education programs at the primary healthcare level.
