Abstract

Uncontrolled population growth underscores the importance of family planning programs, one of which involves the use of monthly injectable contraceptives containing a combination of estrogen and progesterone hormones. Despite their effectiveness, this method may produce side effects that vary depending on the duration of use. This study aimed to identify side effects in new acceptors, identify side effects in long-term acceptors, and analyze differences in the incidence of side effects between new and long-term acceptors of monthly injectable contraceptives at Puskesdes Lamunti A1. A quantitative approach with a comparative study design was employed. The sample consisted of 30 respondents divided equally into 15 new and 15 long-term acceptors, selected using total sampling. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level. Results showed that 80.0% of new acceptors experienced side effects, with weight change as the predominant complaint (80.0%). In contrast, 66.7% of long-term acceptors reported no side effects, though those who did tended to experience menstrual disturbances and pain. Statistical tests yielded p = 0.010 for the incidence of side effects and p = 0.045 for the type of side effects, both statistically significant. It is concluded that acceptor status significantly influences the incidence and type of side effects of monthly injectable contraceptives. These findings are expected to serve as a basis for healthcare providers in delivering more personalized contraceptive counseling based on usage status.
