Abstract

This study aims to analyze human responsibility toward nature from the perspective of Muhammad Iqbal's Philosophy of Khudi as a paradigm of Islamic environmental ethics amid the contemporary ecological crisis. Based on the assumption that the ecological crisis cannot merely be reduced to technical, economic, or environmental governance issues, this study argues that its root lies in the crisis of human consciousness, which gives rise to anthropocentric and exploitative attitudes toward nature. This study employs a library research method with a philosophical approach by analyzing Muhammad Iqbal's The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam and Asrar-i Khudi. The findings reveal that, first, the Philosophy of Khudi views human beings as conscious, free, creative, and morally responsible subjects in their relationship with nature. Second, ecological degradation is understood as a manifestation of the crisis of khudi, resulting from humanity's failure to exercise freedom responsibly. Third, the Philosophy of Khudi offers an active-transformative paradigm of environmental ethics. This study contributes conceptually by positioning khudi as the philosophical foundation of ecological responsibility while enriching the discourse of Islamic environmental ethics through the integration of self-consciousness, spirituality, and ecological action.
