Abstract

This study presents an integrated petrophysical evaluation of the Cretaceous carbonate Khasib, Mishrif, and Rumaila formations in X Field, Maysan Governorate, southern Iraq, based on wireline log data from four wells (Well-3 to Well-6). Gamma ray, bulk density, neutron porosity, sonic, and resistivity (LLD, MSFL) logs were environmentally corrected, and lithology was identified using neutron–density (N–D) and M–N crossplots, which revealed a mixed limestone–dolomite–sandstone system that varies systematically between formations and structural positions. Volume of clay, effective porosity (ΦE), water saturation (Sw), and bulk volume water (BVW) were calculated for each well. The Mishrif Formation is the most productive interval, with 61 net pay zones in Well-4 (average Sw = 0.367 v/v, average ΦE = 0.143 v/v, maximum Rt = 129.5 ohm·m). The Khasib Formation in Well-3 shows the field's highest porosities (average ΦE = 0.324 v/v, maximum 0.450 v/v), linked to a dolomite-enhanced mixed carbonate fabric. Despite a high average water saturation (0.654 v/v), the Rumaila Formation contributes 57 net pay zones in Well-5. BVW analysis identified mobile-hydrocarbon zones and underpins a quantitative reservoir-quality framework to guide enhanced recovery planning in X Field. This productivity interpretation is based on wireline-log petrophysical indicators and should be further validated with core or production data.
