Abstract

The growing demand for lightweight, strong, and eco-friendly materials has encouraged the development of natural fiber-reinforced composites. This study investigates the mechanical properties of hybrid composites made from coconut coir fiber, fiberglass, and epoxy resin. The aim is to evaluate the effect of different fiber volume fractions on the tensile, impact, and flexural strength of the material. Specimens were fabricated using the hand lay-up method with three fiber volume variations: A (10% coir, 20% fiberglass), B (15%:15%), and C (20%:10%), with epoxy matrix fixed at 70%. Mechanical tests followed ASTM D-3039, D-5924, and D-790 standards. The results revealed that Fraction C exhibited the best performance with tensile strength of 25.52 MPa, impact energy of 11.18 J/m², and flexural strength of 71.86 MPa. These values are comparable to or exceed the minimum requirements for helmet shell materials as specified by SNI 1811-2007. Therefore, this hybrid composite shows great potential as an alternative protective material for motorcycle helmets while adding value to local biomass waste.
