Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease whose prevalence continues to increase, including among adolescents. Lifestyle changes, such as unhealthy dietary patterns, lack of physical activity, and sedentary habits, are major risk factors for the development of T2DM at a young age. Adolescents' attitudes toward T2DM prevention play an important role in shaping preventive behaviors. This study aimed to determine the relationship between attitudes and preventive behaviors of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among adolescents at SMK Nasional Purwokerto. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used was quota sampling. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula with a 5% margin of error, resulting in 235 respondents. The research instruments were questionnaires measuring attitudes and T2DM preventive behaviors that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test. The results showed that most respondents had positive attitudes and good T2DM preventive behaviors. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between attitudes and T2DM preventive behaviors among adolescents (p-value < 0.05). Adolescents with more positive attitudes tended to demonstrate better preventive behaviors. The study concludes that there is a significant relationship between attitudes and preventive behaviors of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among adolescents. Continuous health education is needed to foster positive attitudes in order to improve T2DM preventive behaviors from an early age.
