Abstract

This study examines body shaming toward women as a form of sexism within digital interpersonal communication on social media. Positioned within the intersection of computer-mediated communication and gender studies, this research explores how sexist meanings are constructed, negotiated, and internalized through user interactions. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes user comments and responses on selected social media content related to women’s appearance. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of interaction, forms of communication, and representations of sexism. The findings reveal that body shaming appears in both explicit and symbolic forms, ranging from hostile comments to subtle and humorous expressions that carry implicit aesthetic judgments. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that such interactions contribute to the internalization of negative body perceptions among women, while also allowing for limited forms of resistance through humor, reinterpretation, and self-affirmation. This research concludes that digital interpersonal communication functions as an ambivalent space that simultaneously reproduces and negotiates sexism. The study contributes to expanding interpersonal communication research by highlighting the role of everyday digital interactions in shaping gendered meanings and social norms.
