Abstract

Background: Elderly individuals—defined as those aged 60 years and older—require particular attention regarding their physical activity. Family support is one of the factors that can help elderly people maintain physical activity. Lack of family support may cause elderly people to be less motivated to engage in daily activities. Research Methods: This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. A sample of 69 respondents was selected using accidental sampling. The instruments used included the Physical Activities Scale for the Elderly (PASE) questionnaire and a family support questionnaire derived from the study by Ester Napitupulu. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman’s rho test. Research Objective: To determine the relationship between family support and the level of physical activity among the elderly in the working area of the Pahandut Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Palangka Raya. Research Results: The results showed that 47 respondents (68.1%) received family support in the supportive category, while 22 respondents (31.9%) were in the unsupported category. The physical activity level of elderly respondents was categorized as good in 43 respondents (62.3%), moderate in 4 respondents (5.8%), and low in 22 respondents (31.9%). The Spearman Rank test obtained a p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient of 0.948. Since the p-value < α = 0.05, H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. This indicates a significant relationship between family support and the level of physical activity among elderly people. Conclusion: There was a very strong and positive relationship between family support and the level of physical activity among elderly people. The better the family support provided, the better the level of physical activity among elderly people. Keywords: family support, physical activity, elderly.
