Abstract

The mineralization of enamel and dentin is a critical process in oral growth and development, underpinning the structural integrity and functional capacity of teeth. This process is highly dependent on the coordinated roles of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus. Vitamin D functions as a key regulator of mineral homeostasis, enhancing intestinal absorption and systemic availability of calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for hydroxyapatite crystal nucleation and growth. Calcium serves both as a structural component and as a signaling ion, orchestrating biomineralization within the extracellular matrix of dental tissues, while phosphorus contributes to crystal lattice formation and stabilization. Deficiencies or imbalances in these nutrients during critical developmental periods can result in enamel hypoplasia, dentin defects, and increased susceptibility to dental caries, ultimately compromising oral health. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the interdependent roles of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus in enamel and dentin formation, emphasizing their physiological, biochemical, and clinical significance in supporting optimal dental development
