Abstract

Road infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting economic growth and improving accessibility, particularly in rural areas such as Karo Regency. This study aims to analyze and compare flexible pavement design methods for the construction of the Kutabangun–Kutakendit road section, specifically at STA 0+000 to STA 2+000 in Pola Tebu Village, as a means to facilitate community access and agricultural distribution. The research applies two design approaches, namely the 2017 Revised Highways Pavement Design Manual and the 1993 AASHTO Pavement Design Method, to determine the appropriate pavement thickness structure. The results show that based on the 2017 Revised Highways method, the surface layer thickness is 100 mm, the base layer is 400 mm, and the embankment fill is 175 mm, while the AASHTO 1993 method produces a surface layer thickness of 110 mm, a base layer of 230 mm, a subbase layer of 260 mm, and an embankment fill of 100 mm. These findings indicate variations in structural design between the two methods, which can be used as a reference in selecting the most suitable pavement design to ensure durability, efficiency, and optimal performance of rural road infrastructure.
