Abstract

This study examines the cultural conception of the expression of love language in interactions between parents and children in Minangkabau families living in Solok City. Using qualitative methods with a Life History approach as well as data collection techniques carried out through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The informants were selected using purposive sampling, with key informants comprising nine families and ordinary informants, namely traditional leaders. The focus of this research is to understand how parents express affection for children in daily life, a practice constructed and influenced by Minangkabau cultural values. The results of the study show that the expression of parental affection in Minangkabau families is more predominantly manifested through nonverbal forms in real daily actions, such as attention, supervision, help, togetherness, and involvement in children's lives. Despite the differences in intensity between families, the informant pointed out that the expression of affection is firmly rooted in traditional and religious values as part of the Minangkabau cultural conception. The expression of affection is reflected in parenting, and communication styles in the family. In addition, there is a shift in the way of expressing affection between the old generation which emphasizes real actions and the firmness of moral values, and the current generation which prioritizes the expression of feelings and emotional closeness.
