Abstract

The expansion of luxury resorts in popular tourist destinations has led to concerns about gentrification and its impact on local communities in Indonesia. This paper explores the social and economic consequences of luxury tourism development, focusing on the displacement of local populations, rising property prices, and the loss of community identity in regions such as Bali, Lombok, and Java. The study examines the interplay between high-end resort development, land acquisition policies, and the transformation of local economies. Through a mixed-methods approach, including interviews with local residents, developers, and government officials, the paper identifies the negative effects of gentrification, such as the marginalization of low-income groups and the erosion of traditional livelihoods. It further discusses the role of government regulations, corporate responsibility, and community-based tourism models in mitigating these issues. The research concludes by advocating for more equitable tourism development strategies that ensure the protection of local communities and preserve the cultural and social fabric of tourist areas.
