Abstract

Living with diabetes mellitus can cause emotional distress that interferes with daily care, but the assessment of diabetes-related distress in primary care services is still not carried out consistently. This study aims to describe the level of diabetes-related distress among people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the working area of the Kagok Community Health Center in Semarang. The study used a quantitative descriptive design with 90 patients with diabetes selected via consecutive sampling. Diabetes-related distress was measured using the Diabetes Distress Scale-17 instrument. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in cross-tabulations by respondent characteristics. The results showed that most respondents experienced low levels of distress, while a small number reported moderate distress, and high distress was rare. Moderate to high distress was more common in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus and was also found in groups with shorter disease duration, comorbidities, and specific occupational categories. These findings support the need to integrate distress screening into diabetes services at community health centers. Follow-up nursing management is carried out in stages through literacy-sensitive education, family involvement, and appropriate referral mechanisms for patients with increasing distress.
