Abstract

Vaginal discharge is a common reproductive health condition among adolescent girls, often associated with inadequate awareness and improper hygiene practices. During adolescence, individuals are particularly vulnerable to health risks due to limited knowledge and behavioral factors. Therefore, understanding the relationship between awareness and hygiene practices is essential in preventing reproductive health problems. This study aimed to analyze the association between reproductive health awareness, attitudes, and personal hygiene practices with the occurrence of vaginal discharge among female students. A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at Harapan Mekar Senior High School, Medan. The population included all female students in grade XII, and total sampling was used, involving 33 respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results indicated that knowledge (p = 0.005), attitudes (p = 0.016), and personal hygiene practices (p = 0.005) were significantly associated with the incidence of vaginal discharge. These findings emphasize the importance of improving reproductive health awareness and fostering positive hygiene behavior among adolescents. In conclusion, strengthening educational programs on reproductive health and promoting proper hygiene practices are crucial steps in reducing the incidence of vaginal discharge among adolescent girls. Preventive efforts should be initiated early to support long-term health outcomes.
